What is SSC Stenographer exam? What is the work done by them?


The SSC stenographer examination is a written test conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for the recruitment of Grade C and Grade D stenographers for various Indian government ministries/departments. Grade C posts are Group B non-gazetted posts, whereas Grade D posts is Group C non-gazetted posts. The SSC Stenographer exam is conducted every year and applications are accepted online only.

Preliminary examination (written test):

The preliminary written test consists of objective-type questions from the English language and General Awareness, and carries 200 marks. There will be negative marking for wrong answers – 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Skill test

The skill test is a typing test in which qualified candidates are scored based on their typing speed in Hindi and English along with their accuracy. Candidates should note that only those candidates who qualify in the written exam can appear for this skill test and they will only be considered eligible if they obtain a minimum qualifying score.

Any Indian citizen below 40 years of age can apply for this post. A candidate should have completed 12th grade from a recognised board or university to be eligible for this post. However, final year students are also eligible to apply provided they complete their remaining examinations before the date of the written exam.

Job responsibilities of a Stenographer

Stenographer exam is one of the toughest SSC exam. A stenographer is a person who has expertise in shorthand writing and typing with the help of a stenotype machine or stenograph machine. The person assists an executive or a lawyer or other professionals in their job. A stenographer has to take down dictation from the executive or lawyer and then later type it from the shorthand notes taken.

The job responsibilities of a stenographer include transcribing dictation and taking notes at meetings, conferences and court proceedings. The stenographer may also be responsible for transcribing medical reports, legal documents or other material.

A stenographer’s work involves sitting at a desk with a headset on while they listen to someone dictate notes or report information over the phone. They then type out what they hear in real time so that it can be transcribed into text.

A stenographer is a person trained in the art of stenography.
