Distracting Yourself With Entertainment

Before you leave for your trip, try changing your watch to the time of the country you will be flying to. This will make it easier for your body to adjust to the new time zone.

 

Since well-rested travelers acclimatize more quickly, it’s a good idea to try to take a few naps, even if the entire flight falls in the daytime of your destination. Be sure to try to get some sleep during your new night time.

Sit Still

It’s hard for your body to sit in an airplane seat for hours without activity. If you don’t move and stretch your limbs regularly every 20 minutes during the flight, you’re putting yourself at great risk. You are more likely to arrive with a sore back, neck, swollen face, and numb legs.

 

More seriously, people who sit motionless for long periods of time are more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis, a condition in which blood clots form, usually in the legs. The real problem is that some of the blood clots can break off and travel to the heart or brain, resulting in serious injury or death. Doctors recommend that airline passengers increase exercise on their leg muscles during the flight by walking around the cabin or exercising their shins in a seated position.

Too Much Alcohol

A glass of wine at dinner on an international flight? Reasonable (especially if you’re also replenishing your water balance). Three shots of vodka in a row on a flight? Not a good idea. Both air travel and alcohol cause dehydration, and this is a major cause of hangover and jetlag suffering. Alcohol also raises your body temperature, which can actually make it difficult to sleep on a flight. So to avoid ruining your trip before it even begins, wait until you arrive at your hotel. Experiencing a hangover not on board a plane is much easier anyway.

Don’t Drink Water

Unfortunately, the effects of even mild dehydration can linger with you long after you land. Mild discomfort, such as dry skin and itchy eyes, usually goes away within a day or two if you diligently drink enough water upon arrival. The big problem for most people is that dehydration exacerbates the symptoms of jet lag – fatigue, sleep problems, irritability and nausea. To get rid of the unpleasant effects of the flight, take your own water on board and be sure to drink plenty of fluids before, during and after the flight. Don’t refuse offers from flight attendants to pour you water. It will do you good.

Sit Next to a Sick Person

We can’t know in advance who we’ll end up sitting next to on the plane. But if your seat neighbor turns out to be a poor man with a huge bag of cold medicine and a table with a tray full of used tissues, it’s probably worth taking the time to try to change seats.

 

Here’s what we recommend: Stand up and gently ask the flight attendant if there’s an empty seat somewhere else on the plane, stating the reason you want to change.

 

If there is no way to sit down, be sure to wash your hands often, use antiseptic and a mask if you have one, avoid touching your face, and place the air vent directly in front of your face to try to repel some of the germs your seatmate so generously shares with you.
